Recent achievements among the university community were earned by Matthew Boring, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Jeffrey L. Day, Emira Ibrahimpasic, David Karle, Kate Kunzman, Quinlan McFadden, Jamie Schacher, Samuel Underwood and Rylee Worstell.

Honors

  • Dawn O. Braithwaite, Willa Cather Professor of Communication Studies, was recently honored by the Family Communication Division of the National Communication Association. The group renamed their annual book honor the Dawn O. Braithwaite Distinguished Book Award. Braithwaite is a past winner of the award. The division’s officers said the honor celebrates Braithwaite’s scholarship and her being a “steadfast contributor to, supporter of and advocate for family communication and its scholars.” Learn more about Braithwaite’s research.

  • “Negotiating Peace: From Conflict to Coexistence,” a course developed by Emira Ibrahimpasic and Kate Kunzman, was named the 2021 recipient of the Award for Excellence in Education Abroad Curriculum Design by the Forum on Education Abroad. Kunzman, Education Abroad coordinator, and Ibrahimpasic, assistant professor of practice, and assistant director of Global Studies, created a virtual summer course designed to keep students connected with the world while travel was paused due to COVID-19.   • David Karle, associate professor and director of the university’s architecture program, earned the American Institute of Architects 2021 Nebraska Architectural/Design Education award. The honor, presented during AIA’s Nebraska Excellence in Design Awards Gala, recognized Karle’s excellence in instruction and student success.

  • Quinlan McFadden and Jamie Schacher, Master of Architecture students, earned a “Built and Unbuilt Merit Award” in the Emerging Professionals category at the AIA’s Nebraska Excellence in Design Awards Gala. The award was for a “Neighbor-Type House” project that featured an affordable housing prototype. The design was developed through a fall 2020 FACT Lab design studio.

  • Jeffrey L. Day, professor of architecture, was presented an “Unbuilt Architecture Honorable Mention Award” during the American Institute of Architects 2021 Nebraska Architectural/Design Education award. The award was for “Basketball Training Center, a sports training facility designed for under resourced communities.

  • Samuel Underwood, a doctoral student in architectural engineering with an emphasis in acoustics, received two fellowships from the Acoustical Society of America. The awards include a $30,000 Leo and Gabriella Beranek Scholarship in Architectural Acoustics and Noise Control; and a $3,000 Frank and Virginia Winker Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Acoustics. Underwood is advised by Lily Wang, director of the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction and professor of architectural engineering. Learn more about Underwood and the awards.

  • Rylee Worstell, a graduate student in the Glenn Korff School of Music, earned top awards in the Art of Opera and Art of Song categories of the Great Composers international competition. The Great Composers competition is a series of international music competitions for young performers, including instrumentalists, singers and chamber groups. Appointments

  • Matthew Boring has been named deputy director of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In his new role, he will lead all marketing, development, and patron experience activities, as well as strategic planning for ticket sales and donations. He has been part of the Lied Center team since 2011, most recently as associate director of marketing and patron development.
