Achievements | Honors, appointments, publications for Sept. 24

Recent achievements among the university community were earned by Eileen Boswell, Frauke Hachtmann, Rumiko Handa, Jennifer Kruse, Janel Simons, Julie Wu and John Wunder.

Honors

  • Eileen Boswell, doctoral candidate in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, won a first-year Nebraska Educator award for exemplary student work. Her award-winning paper, “Again Awake: A White Researcher’s Iterative Positioning for Entering Black Spaces,” will be featured in the October edition of Nebraska Educator, the College of Education and Human Sciences’ journal for graduate students. Boswell’s paper was selected as the winner from four entries.

  • Frauke Hachtmann, professor of advertising, received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications’ Advertising Division on Aug. 8. The award recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching over a sustained period of time.

  • Jennifer Kruse received the 2021 Cheris Kramerae Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender. Kruse, a lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies and the Women’s and Gender Studies program, wrote the dissertation, “Exploring Constructions Of ‘Good’ Motherhood On Social Media: Navigating Neoliberal Mommy Rhetorics and the Negative Affective Entanglements of Women’s Discourses On Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram.”

  • Julie Wu, assistant professor of finance, and her co-authors received the first prize in the Spängler-IQAM award for the Best Investments Paper in the Review of Finance. This award was presented at the European Finance Association meetings in August 2021 for her paper titled, “What Do Short Sellers Know?” Review of Finance is among the Financial Times top 50 journals.

  • John Wunder, professor emeritus of history, received the 2021 Sower Award in the Humanities from Humanities Nebraska. The annual award honors an individual who has made a significant contribution to the public understanding of the humanities in Nebraska.

Appointments

  • Janel Simons has been selected as the humanities librarian and an assistant professor of practice in the University Libraries. She began in the post on Aug. 1. Her focus is on teaching and working with faculty and students in humanities departments and program areas to support their research. She brings previous experience as an instruction specialist for the libraries as well as working on various interdisciplinary projects in the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities.
