Calla Kessler received an award of excellence in the sports feature competition of the 71st College Photographer of the Year competition with her photo “Untitled.”

Recent accomplishments by the campus community were earned by faculty Ted Hamann and Elizabeth Niehaus. Other honors include the College of Journalism and Mass Communications winning seven ADDYs Awards.

Faculty/Staff

  • Ted Hamann, professor in teaching, learning and teacher education, has been selected as one of 13 state-specific Equity Fellows for the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center. Serving Nebraska, Hamann joins other nationally prominent scholars who have engaged deeply and published widely on one or more of the four desegregation areas—race, sex, national origin, and religion—focused on by MAP EAC.   • Elizabeth Niehaus, assistant professor in educational administration, will be receiving two honors for her professional service and research next month in Columbus, Ohio, at the annual convention of the American College Personnel Association. The first award is the 2017 Outstanding Service to the International Community Award. Niehaus will also receive a 2017 Excellence in International Research Award, for her work with Letitia Williams of the University of Trinidad and Tobago. Both awards are presented by the ACPA Commission for Global Dimensions of Student Development. The service award recognizes an individual for contributions to the international education community. Niehaus’ service included leadership on developing new recommendations for the association’s professional competencies revision task force.

Students

  • Chris Bowling, junior journalism student, placed first in the enterprise reporting competition of The Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Natasha Rausch, senior journalism student, placed sixth. Bowling won out of 119 entries from 66 schools. He was awarded a $2,600 scholarship with a matching grant awarded to the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Both students wrote pieces on Whiteclay: Bowling’s was “A Day in the Life (and Death) of Whiteclay” and Rausch’s was “The Cost of a Can of Beer.”

  • Four students received the William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award presented by NIRSA, Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, during the association’s annual conference Feb. 21-24 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The recipients are Renee Craft, a senior athletic training major from Castle Rock, Colorado; Brook McCluskey, a junior nutrition, exercise and health science and dietetics double-major from Newcastle, Nebraska; Melanie Rossetti, an educational leadership/administration master’s degree graduate student from Portland, Oregon; Courtney Schnell, a community nutrition and health promotion master’s degree graduate student from Alliance, Nebraska. It recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who are active participants, employees or volunteers in collegiate recreational sports departments. Criteria for the award include self-improvement through leadership, academic success, activities, volunteerism and promoting inclusion. Nebraska leads the nation with 78 recipients since the award’s inception in 1993 and is the only higher education institution in the country to have at least one Wasson Award winner every year the award has been given.

  • Zahoor Ganie and Parminder Chahal, University of Nebraska–Lincoln agronomy doctoral students, and postdoctoral research associate Debalin Sarangi took top honors at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Weed Science Society of America held Feb. 6-9 in Tucson, Arizona. Ganie and Chahal both received first place in the WSSA Outstanding Ph.D. Student Poster Contest Award. Sarangi received first place in the WSSA Outstanding Photography Award with his photo titled “Risk of Gene Flow: Johnsongrass Plant in a Sorghum Field.” Sarangi’s research focus is on the biology, gene flow, and management of herbicide-resistant weeds in Nebraska.   • Mekenzie Kerr, senior, and Zachary Penrice, sophomore, both students in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications placed third in the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts. Kerr placed in the Student Interactive Multimedia Competition with her project, “Living with dementia: Nebraska plan may provide support.” Penrice placed in the Radio Sports Story/Feature/News Category competitions with his project, “Husker Football Players National Anthem Protest.” For more information, click here.

  • Calla Kessler, a senior journalism student, was one of four students to receive an award of excellence in the sports feature competition of the 71st College Photographer of the Year competition. Kessler submitted her photo “Untitled,” of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s women’s gymnastics team. The CPOY competition has 18 categories, including spot news, general news, feature, sports action and sports feature, among others. More than 600 students from 130 colleges and universities enter the CPOY competition.

  • The Emerge Project Team was honored by Woodworks during the 2017 Wood Design Awards. The student team won one of seven regional excellence awards. The award will be presented to the team March 22 at the Texas Wood Solutions Fair in Dallas, Texas. The project, “Emerge” was a 100 square foot shed that will hold small groups of teachers and students visiting Bauman Tree farm in Eugene, Oregon. The project was led by architecture assistant professor Jason Griffith and included architecture students: David Rogelio Alcala, Hanna Christy, Joseph Roy Croghan, Justin Philip DeFields, Danielle Alexa Durham, Eric Lee Engler, Virginia Michelle Gormley, Scott Christopher Kenny, Devin Bayles McLean, Kristen Michelle Schulte, Darian Johnathon Scott, Alfredo F. Departments/College/Units

  • The College of Journalism and Mass Communications students won seven awards, four golds and three silvers, in seven different categories at the 2017 ADDYs Awards Feb. 18. In addition, Jacht, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln CoJMC student-run advertising agency, also won silver. The student work was produced for a wide range of media that came out of six different Advertising and Public Relation courses.
