Recent accomplishments received by Nebraska faculty and staff were earned by Edgar Cahoon, Sara Duke, Dan Duncan, Rachel Gordon, Tyler Howell, Bailea Kerr, Ben Kunz, Mallory Lane, Kylie Miller, Rosamond Thalken and Mallory Wallace.

Faculty/Staff

  • Edgar Cahoon, biochemistry professor and Director of the Center for Plant Science Innovation, was awarded a Hedersdoktor — honorary doctoral degree — Oct. 7 from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences at a graduation ceremony in Uppsala, Sweden. Cahoon was nominated for the honor by the SLU Department of Plant Breeding in recognition of long-term collaboration with SLU researchers to develop high-value biotech oilseeds. Cahoon presented a seminar, along with five other honorary doctors on Oct. 6. Following the graduation ceremony, Cahoon participated in a 500-person dinner celebration at the Uppsala Castle with doctoral graduates, administrators and guests.

Dan Duncan
  • Dan Duncan, executive director of Nebraska Innovation Campus, has been elected to serve on the Association of University Research Parks’ board of directors. Duncan was selected during the association’s 2017 International Conference, which was Oct. 12 in Huntsville, Alabama. Read more about Duncan’s selection.   • Mallory Wallace, internship coordinator with Career Services, had an academic article published in the Journal of Negotiation and Conflict Management Research. The article, “Graphic Novels: A Brief History, Their Use in Business Education, and the Potential for Negotiation Pedagogy,” examines methods to integrate graphic novels into classroom settings. Students

  • Sara Duke, Rachel Gordon, Bailea Kerr and Rosamond Thalken presented papers at the recent European Studies Conference, which was hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Along with adviser Beverley Rilett, an assistant research professor of English, the students gave talks as part of a panel, “Digitizing Print Scholarship and Creating Online Archives: Lessons from the George Eliot Archive.” Each student researched and spoke on a different aspect of the team’s digital project. The European Studies Conference, an interdisciplinary and international gathering of scholars, has facilitated an active exchange of ideas, insights and reflections for 42 years.

  • Several architecture students were among honorees at the 2017 AIA Nebraska/Central States Region Design Excellence Awards Celebration, which was Oct. 5 in Omaha. Mallory Lane and Ben Kunz won the Emerging Architects Excellence in Unbuilt Architecture Honor Award for their project “Interstitial Hope.” In addition to the AIA Nebraska award, “Interstitial Hope” was the winner of the spring 2017 SGH/Dri-Design competition and selected for a SARA-National Award. Additionally, a design concept for a Lutheran church earned Tyler Howell and Kylie Miller earned the AIA’s Emerging Architects Unbuilt People’s Choice award. Entries were judged based on a variety of features, including unique design, originality, extended use attributes, sustainability and use of environmental surroundings.
