The university is seeking applications for one member of its two-person team of faculty ombuds. Candidates must be able to begin in summer 2022, with an exact start date being negotiable.
A faculty ombud is someone who faculty members can talk to about workplace issues in complete confidence, listens to concerns as a neutral party, and serves as an advocate for fairness and equity. Ombuds assist faculty in working toward informal resolution of concerns prior to filing formal grievances and are not involved in the formal grievance process.
Eligible candidates must hold the rank of associate or full professor in any track (tenure, research, practice, or extension) or have emeritus status at one of those ranks. The ombud team is a pair of faculty members from different colleges. Since the continuing member is from the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, applications will only be considered from faculty outside the Institute.
Successful candidates must possess excellent listening, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills, be open to multiple perspectives, and be able to keep information confidential. The successful candidate will be supported to become a member of the International Ombudsman Association, attend the Foundations of the Organizational Ombuds Course from IOA, and, if desired, seek certification.
Preference will be given to candidates who have had broad experiences at the university, including some form of leadership role at the department, college or campus level.
Potential applicants should discuss this opportunity with their department chair and/or dean before applying. Interested applicants should send a single pdf file that includes (in this order) a letter of interest, a current curriculum vitae, a brief letter of endorsement from the applicant’s department chair and/or dean, and a list of three professional references to facultyaffairs@unl.edu by April 18.
