Nebraska’s Marco Barker has been appointed to serve on the NCAA Board of Governors Committee to Promote Cultural Diversity and Equity.
The committee is charged with promoting diversity and equity for individuals of all cultural backgrounds. Working with the NCAA Board of Governors, the committee reviews, endorses and makes recommendations regarding diversity and inclusion matters that impact the NCAA. It specifically reviews reports from the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics and NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The diversity and equity committee has been in operation since 2017.
“This is an incredible opportunity to help promote and advance diversity and equity for all student-athletes and administration across the NCAA,” Barker said. “I feel a tremendous responsibility to provide a voice and expertise on these issues.
“This appointment also comes with excitement to represent Nebraska and the Big Ten Conference while working with other conference leaders and students from other divisions and institutions.”
Barker is one of three at-large members, filling a position designated for an individual whose job focus addresses diversity and equity initiatives. Other members include six presidents/chancellors, an athletics administrator and a student-athlete.
Barker’s term on the committee continues through August 2023.
