Three larger-than-life bronze bison sculptures by Nebraska artist Gary Staab visited Morrill Hall on March 14 as part of a weeklong cross-country journey to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Commissioned by the Smithsonian to celebrate the national mammal and the U.S. 250th anniversary, the statues were on display for museum visitors to admire and learn about bison biology, conservation and cultural significance. The event featured activities led by museum and Smithsonian staff, a puppet show by Heather Henson and a cultural program by Omaha Tribe educator Renee Sans Souci. Staab and Kirk Johnson, director of the National Museum of Natural History, were present, highlighting Nebraska’s connection to the project and the enduring importance of bison in North American history.
