Five years after winning the Palme d’Or for “Shoplifters,” Academy award-nominated filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda returns with “Broker,” starring Cannes Best actor winner Song Kang Ho (Parasite), which opens at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center Jan. 13.
Also showing is “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a #@%!”
“Broker” follows two brokers who sell orphaned infants, circumventing the bureaucracy of legal adoption, to affluent couples who can’t have children of their own. After an infant’s mother surprises the duo by returning to ensure her child finds a good home, the three embark on a journey to find the right couple, building an unlikely family of their own. The film skirts the edges of sentimentality, but is consistently grounded by director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s warm, tenderly melancholic approach.
“Broker,” which is rated R for language, is showing through Jan. 26.
In “The Subtle of not Giving a #@%!,” the human journey is explored. Happiness comes not from a pill, a nice car, more money or being better looking. True joy, the author tells us, is found in achievement; in the journey of life itself. In this feature documentary adaptation, we will bring this incredibly successful book to the screen with an engaging, thought provoking and entertaining journey into modern life. And in doing so will allow the audience to take away from the theatre the powerful message that has caught on worldwide. How not to give a f*ck about that which doesn’t matter, and how to love that which does.
Based on the global bestselling self-help phenomenon, “The Subtle of not Giving a #@%!” is a cinematic documentary designed to help us become less awful people.
