Ted Carter, president of the University of Nebraska system, issued an Dec. 7 update on the NU budget and future. The email message provides an overview of the comments Carter presented Dec. 1 to the NU Board of Regents.
“As you know, we are embarking on an ambitious effort to reimagine the University of Nebraska in today’s complex and changing higher education landscape,” Carter wrote. “This is a challenging period, to be sure. But I have been energized to hear from so many of you who are choosing to view our challenges as opportunities — to answer our board’s call to reprioritize our resources and become a more competitive, vibrant university worthy of readmission into the coalition of America’s most prestigious institutions.”
The update also included information on the “Five-Point Plan” and progress in the systemwide “zero-based budget” review. The reviews were completed by a Dec. 1 deadline and are being reviewed. Carter and Chris Kabourek, chief financial officer and incoming interim president, will meet with chancellors and chief business officers in the coming weeks to review the materials and discuss options. No final decisions on the review will be made this year, Carter said.
