Conference will focus on psychological first aid, recovery

The 15th annual Great Plains Disaster Behavioral Health Conference, presented by the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 27 and 28 at Embassy Suites in downtown Omaha, 555 S. 10th St. This year’s theme is “Back to Basics.”

Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health care providers, public health officials, nurses, clergy, emergency managers and first responders are encouraged to attend.

The conference’s first day, which is sold out, is titled “Nebraska Disaster Psychological First Aid.” The second day is titled “Skills for Psychological Recovery.” The featured presenter for the second day is Melissa Brymer, director of terrorism and disaster programs at the UCLA/Duke University National Center for Child Traumatic Stress and its National Child Traumatic Stress Network.

Registration for the second day is $90 and can be done here. It is recommended that anyone attending the second day have previous training in psychological first aid.
