Campus Recreation offers several safety classes this spring, including CPR, AED + First Aid and Lifeguard/Water Safety certification courses.
The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies.
Completed training provides a two-year American Red Cross certification often required for both professional and service jobs. Participants can also earn academic credit for this course by enrolling in FITN160 on MyRed. Non-credit course fees are $60 for university students and Campus Recreation members and $75 for non-members.
These classes are offered during the following dates:
- 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 15
- 4:30 to 7 p.m. March 16
- 4:30 to 7 p.m. April 19

The Lifeguard Certification course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. The participants will learn to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over. It’s a blended learning course that combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where participants will practice skills and demonstrate competency.
Registration deadline is Jan. 25. Participants must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course, attend and successfully complete the mandatory pre-course skills evaluation on Jan. 30th, and complete the online blended learning prior to the first on-site skills session scheduled for Feb. 10.
The weekend certification course is 5 to 10 p.m. Feb. 10 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 12. Registration fees are $195 for university students and Campus Recreation members, $225 for non-members (plus a $35 non-refundable fee to the American Red Cross for the online learning component).
