The Durham School Distinguished Lecture Series returns 12:15-1:15 p.m. Oct. 27 with Thanos Tzempelikos, professor of civil engineering at Purdue University, presenting “Towards Human-Centered, Adaptive Indoor Environments.”
The presentation will occur in Nebraska Hall, room 175 or via Zoom.
This lecture will present recent progress towards human-centered building design and operation, in the thermal and visual domains. The concept of adaptive and cognitive buildings will be explored, where IoT-augmented indoor environments and predictive control can learn, reason and make optimal decisions. Tzempelikos will present the development of new algorithms for automated identification of the relevant human perception-attributes of buildings. These enable intelligent and self-tuned comfort delivery systems for customized thermal and visual indoor environments. In addition, this lecture will cover applications in sensing and controlling daylight in buildings using programmable image sensors. Finally, the translation of components-based research to fenestration system design and guidelines will be presented along with proposed technology transfer tools.
Tzempelikos is a faculty member in Herrick Labs and the Purdue Center for High Performance Buildings. He specializes in the design, operation and optimization of high-performance buildings. His research is focused on design and control of dynamic facades, daylighting, indoor environmental quality and comfort, predictive building simulation, probabilistic and AI-assisted learning of personalized occupant preferences, model-based building control with integrated smart sensing, and radiant systems operation. His research has been funded by NSF, DOE, ASHRAE, foundations and engineering and manufacturing industry partners. He has published more than 150 articles in refereed scientific journals and conference proceedings. He is the chair of the bi-annual International High-Performance Buildings conference at Purdue since 2010, a Member of ASHRAE and a Member of the Daylight Academy. Tzempelikos currently serves as editor of Building and Environment journal and section editor of Energy and Buildings journal. He is the recipient of the Concordia University Doctoral Prize, the ASHRAE New Investigator Award, the Wansik Research Award, and several best paper awards with his students and colleagues, including the Gaster Award from the Society for Light and Lighting.
