The Employee Assistance Program is offering a speaker presentation on dementia, 4-5 p.m. May 1 in the Nebraska Union, Platte River Room South. The goal is to help university employees better understand dementia and respond effectively and respectfully when interacting with those who have it.
Kristy Weissling, a professor of practice interim chair of the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, will provide a clear overview of dementia in "Community and Connection Event for Caregivers: Understanding Dementia: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Help." The presentation includes information regarding what happens in the brain, common types of dementia and why it matters in everyday interactions.
From a speech-language pathology perspective, Weissling will focus on how dementia affects communication and thinking and discuss practical strategies for interacting with individuals who have dementia—whether in the workplace, community or at home.
Individuals can register for the event by April 25 by sending email to eap@unl.edu or calling 402-472-3107.
