The premier undergraduate engineering student design event in Nebraska will be from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 21 in Memorial Stadium’s East Stadium Club Level.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Senior Design Showcase is free and open to the public. Guests can browse the new and innovative projects from graduating College of Engineering students and vote on their favorite project for the People’s Choice Award.
The showcase features 46 student team projects that reflect real-world professional environments. In some cases, students have collaborated with industry clients to develop products and devices that will have immediate impacts.
The projects include:
A team of biological systems engineering students’ device to help John Deere separate the oil and air in its hydraulic system to prevent damage to filters.
Five chemical and biomolecular engineering students’ work with Nebraska Public Power District to upgrade the refining process to convert biogas into consumer-grade natural gas.
Five biological systems engineering students’ upgrade of the retrofitting process for turning children’s electric cars into vehicles that will allow young children with mobility challenges to have autonomy of movement and greatly improve their chances of developing normal motor skills. It is part of the Go Baby Go! program through the University of Nebraska Medical Center that has for the past year given modified cars to nearly 20 families in eastern Nebraska.
A team of electrical and computer engineering students in Lincoln’s retrofitting of a 1964 Chevrolet Corvair, removing the conventional internal combustion engine and drive system and installing an electric drive system that could be charged with a standard 15-amp outlet.
Four biological systems engineering students’ device to assist patients to and from an X-ray table to help decrease back and shoulder injuries among radiology department staff members who are required to assist patients at the Veterans Affairs Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System in Omaha.
Among the other senior capstone projects at the showcase are a monitoring system to measure the core temperature of outdoor workers to prevent heat illness; a curved wall design to help prevent tumbleweed buildup on solar panel arrays in eastern Colorado; the design of a processing plant that would help Nigeria feed more people by making more tomato paste and decreasing the country’s reliance on imported products; and various projects with Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, including a device to lift patients from a seat, transfer them to a new location and lower them safely into a new seat.
The showcase will also offer three tours:
Olympic bobsled gold medalist and former Husker football player Curt Tomasevicz will guide visitors through the Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory in East Stadium. Tomasevicz is conducting research in the laboratory as he works toward a doctoral degree in biological systems engineering.
Engineering Ambassadors will show visitors labs and facilities in the engineering complex on City Campus.
Visitors will also have the opportunity for a brief tour of Memorial Stadium.
