Welcome to Explore Lincoln, a new monthly column that features events, exhibitions and interesting things to do on campus and across Lincoln.
Jazz in June
As heat builds during the day, summer chill settles in this month as the 28th season of Jazz in June plays out each Tuesday evening at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The 2019 lineup — which opens with Naughty Professor, a New Orleans-based sextet — features groups with international ties as well as those who hail from classic jazz cities. The free, open-to-the-public concerts include a market with vendors hawking food, drinks and artisan-made crafts; yoga; walking tours; and a bike valet service.
150 Years of Red and White
The International Quilt Museum and Study Center is rolling out the red carpet (and white) quilts in honor of Dear Old Nebraska U’s 150th anniversary celebration. Through Sept. 8, the museum is offering “150 Years of Red and White,” an exhibition of quilts showcasing Nebraska’s school colors. The quilts range from the 1860s when the university was founded until today.
Lincoln Children’s Zoo
Now open year round, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo recently completed an expansion that includes new animal displays and interactive activities for kids of all ages. Be sure to check out the new giraffe area, which features animal toys designed and built by Huskers from Nebraska Engineering.
Haymarket Farmers Market
From fresh produce to food trucks, the weekly farmers market in Lincoln’s Historic Haymarket offers a variety of culinary treats. Open each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon through Oct. 12, the farmers market is ever-changing, with vendors offering baked goods, seasonal produce, prepared food items, flowers, and arts and crafts. The Haymarket Farmers Market is definitely Lincoln’s place to be seen or share a selfie from on Saturday mornings through the summer and fall.
John Breslow Ice Hockey Center
While the ice at Nebraska’s John Breslow Ice Hockey Center is designed for sports — from hockey to curling — the facility offers a chance for cool escapes from summer heat through public skate events. The public skates are offered most days, sandwiched between the center’s classes, camps and competitions. And, on Friday and Saturday evenings, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., workers at Breslow turn down the lights for special Cosmic Skate events. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for youth, with skate rental available for an additional $3. Breslow also offers a variety of annual pass options.
