Welcome to Explore Lincoln, a monthly column that features events, exhibitions and interesting things to do on campus and across Lincoln.
Rock climbing
As the weather gets chillier, there are still plenty of opportunities to stay active indoors at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
Nebraska’s Outdoor Adventures Center offers a rock climbing wall for students and paying staff and faculty members. A wide range of classes are available, for both amateurs and climbing veterans. The wall is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
NPR chat
Elizabeth Jensen and Mark Memmott, editors at National Public Radio, will give a talk on media ethics and decision-making from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Nebraska Union Auditorium.
During the talk, Jensen and Memmott will share stories about the ethical dilemmas they’ve faced while working in the NPR newsroom. The event is free and open to the public.
Stargazing
Looking for a unique, educational way to spend your Saturday night?
Hyde Observatory, located at 3701 S. 70th Street near Holmes Lake, lets visitors peer into the night sky through several telescopes. The observatory also hosts astronomy presentations, and admission is free.
Visitors can stop by each Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. throughout the month of November.
Free ice skating
Nebraska’s John Breslow Ice Hockey Center will host a free student skate night from 8 to 11 p.m. Nov. 15. Students will need to present their N-Card for admission. Skate rental is available at $3 per pair, and members of the general public can skate for $6.
Coffee Talks
On Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., students can gather in the raised seating area of the Nebraska Union for Coffee Talks. The weekly chats bring together international and domestic students for conversations on culture, campus life and more.
Coffee Talks are hosted by Student Affairs and Student Involvement.
