The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center will host "The Dream Lives On: An MLK Legacy Speech Competition" next semester, in which students can speak on a wide range of topics for a chance to win prizes.
The event is part of Black History Month and honors the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The competition will provide a platform for students to develop public speaking skills and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about social issues.
Speech topics include social justice and equality; environmental sustainability; mental health awareness; global citizenship; personal growth and development; cultural diversity and inclusion; technological advancements and their impact on society; intersectionality; multiculturalism; immigration; language and culture; Indigenous peoples; disability rights; LGBTQ+ issues and inclusive leadership; and innovation.
Competitors can choose to give an informative, persuasive or special occasion speech, 5 to 7 minutes in length. Speeches will be judged on content, delivery and overall impact.
Competitors can receive personalized guidance from an experienced public speaker and speechwriter who has crafted speeches for British foreign ministers, ambassadors, and international entrepreneurs and startups.
