A German Embassy grant awarded to Ali Moeller, professor in teaching, learning and teacher education, and Jim Benes, global exchange coordinator in the College of Education and Human Sciences, will fund a week of German immigration-related events Oct. 22-26.
The events, which are open to the entire campus community, include:
“The Changing Faces of Germany: Migration/Immigration Scenes That Tell a Story,” 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Nebraska Union, Colonial Room A — A representative from the German Embassy will provide an introduction and lead a discussion based on more than 30 posters featuring stories of German immigration.
Screening of “Die Fremde/When We Leave,” 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center — The film follows the story of Umay, a young woman of Turkish descent who fights for an independent life in Germany against the resistance of her family.
“The Changing Faces of Germany: The Voices of the Immigrants,” 4 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24, Nebraska Union, Colonial Room A — First-generation immigrants from Germany and the U.S. will share their experiences growing up in a culture away from home.
Roundtable Discussions, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 25, Nebraska Union, Colonial Room A — Discussions will be hosted on the parallels between German and U.S. immigration, as well as the challenges and strengths involved with both.
Hands-On Learning Activities, 3 to 4:30 p.m., Henzlik Hall, Room 107 — Hands-on learning activities meant to deepen understanding and knowledge of U.S. and German immigration.
