Go Green for Big Red, an annual campus program that aims to make game-day tailgating more environmentally responsible, kicks off with Husker football’s Aug. 31 season opener.
The program, now in its 11th year, relies on University of Nebraska–Lincoln students and the community to encourage recycling and expand awareness during home football games. Volunteers — which are still needed for each game — distribute green bags that fans can use to collect recyclables as they tailgate.
“UNL is a recycling friendly campus,” said Prabhakar Shrestha, the university’s sustainability coordinator. “Cornhusker fans have always been good stewards of our natural resources. This effort allows us to extend our environmental practice on home football game days.”
Volunteers meet two hours before the game and finish one hour before kickoff, allowing fans to still catch the game. Free food, T-shirts and reusable bottles and bags will be provided to all volunteers.
