In observance of Women’s History Month, Nebraska Today has partnered with the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women to feature female office/service staff who go above and beyond in their work at Dear Old Nebraska U. This Women of Service series will run in Nebraska Today through March 31.

The series continues today with Tatyana Gulchuk, finance coordinator with the Big Red Business Center. She was nominated by four members of the campus community — John Dillingham, Julie J. Perez, Heather Steffens and Haley Hamel.

The Big Red Business Center supports the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, University Libraries and three colleges — Architecture, Fine and Performing Arts, and Journalism and Mass Communications. Among her many duties, Gulchuk is the Big Red Business Center’s travel expert, assisting faculty, staff and students who have questions or need assistance.

“Tatyana is originally from Ukraine and when war broke out there, she felt it was her duty to go and assist refugees at a processing center in Poland,” said Dillingham, manager of the Big Red Business Center. “She brings that same level of duty and care to her position at UNL. Whether it is your first or 100th time traveling, Tatyana will treat your situation with care and compassion.”

Gulchuk sat down with the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women to discuss what inspires her on and off campus.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I have been married to my wonderful husband, Stan, for almost nine years. We enjoy traveling together and exploring the world. I come from a big family and am the youngest of six kids. I have 14 nephews and nieces. They keep me busy, but I love spending time with them. However, my biggest life joy is my Jesus. He is the one that leads my life and gives me purpose.

How long have you been at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?

It will be five years in November.

What do you look forward to when you come to work?

I enjoy helping people and guiding them in whatever they need. I absolutely love my coworkers. Every time we meet, I enjoy talking to them about everything that goes on in life. I often have opportunities to meet new faculty and hear their stories. I especially enjoy listening to stories from when they travel abroad.

What is your favorite memory at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?

My favorite memory is going back to my first interview at UNL. I had no idea what my future would hold and where I would be today. I didn’t know the individuals interviewing me would become my friends and coworkers. One person from that interview became a close friend and still is today.

What is your life like outside of work?

My life outside of work includes spending much time with my family. It’s either dinner at my parent’s house or a game night at my brother’s place. I am a big coffee drinker, and I love making lattes for my friends with my espresso machine. I have been pretty consistent with going to the gym and reaching new goals with running. Every other Wednesday, we enjoy hosting a teen Bible study at my house.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I prefer to avoid speaking in front of big groups. I often pretend like I am not nervous but actually am. I don’t watch or stream any TV shows. When people are talking about them, I usually have no idea what they’re talking about. I prefer spending my time with family.
