The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is opening a unique Herbie’s Market that features Amazon’s innovative Just Walk Out technology.

Launching with a grand opening celebration on March 25 in the Nebraska Union, the Herbie's Market allows customers to scan a payment method upon entry, pick up items and leave without traditional checkout lines.

“The Nebraska Union has always been more than just a building — it’s the living room of our campus, a place where students come together to study, connect and unwind,” said Lucas Novotny, executive director of housing and dining services. “The addition of Herbie’s Market is another step forward in ensuring that this space continues to serve our entire community.”

The market aims to improve accessibility to fresh food and everyday essentials for students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. It offers an alternative to vending machines and off-campus options, making it easier for students to purchase healthy snacks and necessities without interrupting their schedules.

“This market isn’t just about convenience — it’s about care,” Novotny said. “By bringing Herbie’s Market into the heart of campus, we are reinforcing our commitment to student well-being and ensuring that every student has the resources they need to thrive.”

The store also integrates payment flexibility, allowing students to use Dining Dollars and enabling faculty, staff and visitors to pay via credit or debit cards.

The use of Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology ensures efficiency and ease of use for customers. After initially scanning in to enter the space, customers only need to grab items and exit without waiting to check out. The technology automatically tracks all purchases in real time and charges the payment method indicated at check-in.

“This technology allows us to meet Huskers where they are, providing a cutting-edge shopping experience that matches the fast-paced lifestyle of today,” Novotny said.

The university recognized contributions from University Housing and Dining staff, campus partners and students in bringing Herbie’s Market to life.
