Hoetger explores how technology challenges Fourth Amendment protections

Work led by Lori Hoetger, assistant professor of law, is helping redefine legal searches in the digital age. Video by Aaron Nix and Curt Bright | University Communication and Marketing

Research by Lori Hoetger, assistant professor of law, examines how individuals make decisions about their legal rights, with a particular focus on criminal law and the Fourth Amendment.

Drawing from her background in psychology, Hoetger uses empirical research to explore how courts may need to adjust their approaches to privacy and searches in response to new technologies.

"My research will help solve the problem of how the Fourth Amendment can address what is a search, especially with new technology," Hoetger said. "So, as technology chanages, the amount of information that is available increases, and how the government can access that information also increases. And, so we need to do a better job using our law to address that issue."
