Huskers excel at Entomology Society of America meeting


The University of Nebraska–Lincoln had the highest number of student winners for any individual organization at the meeting of the Entomological Society of America on Nov. 9-14 in Phoenix, Arizona. 

Nearly 800 graduate and undergraduate students representing over 70 institutions from around the world competed across 103 oral presentations and poster competitions at the meeting.

The number competing from Nebraska, 25, was comparable to or even considerably less than that from a number of institutions.

Eleven of the first and second place awards presented went to students in UNL's Department of Entomology. Winners are:

  • 1st Place: Xixian Ng (mentor: Troy Anderson), 10-minute Ph.D. Paper, PBT: Behavior
  • 1st Place: Nikhitha Gangavarapu (mentor: Shaonpius Mondal), 10-minute Ph.D. Paper, P-IE: Vectors of Plant Disease 
  • 1st Place: Natasha Umezu (mentor: Justin McMechan), Poster, Ph.D. PBT: Apiculture, Behavior, Biochemistry, and Insecticides
  • 1st Place: Kristin Stark (mentor: Justin McMechan), Poster, Ph.D. P-IE: Ecology and Vector Control
  • 1st Place: Sanket Shinde (mentor: Joe Louis), Poster, Ph.D. P-IE: Host-Plant Resistance
  • 1st Place: Bhawana Regmi (mentor: Julie Peterson), Poster, Graduate IPM – Field Crops
  • 1st Place: Ricardo Fuchs de Pinho (mentor: Julie Peterson), Poster, Undergraduate P-IE: Biocontrol and IPM
  • 2nd Place: Hannah Stowe (mentor: Julie Peterson), 10-minute Ph.D. Paper, P-IE: Biocontrol – Predators
  • 2nd Place: Kashish Verma (mentor: Joe Louis), 10-minute MS Paper, P-IE: Ecology and IPM
  • 2nd Place: Natalie M. Johnston (co-mentors: Gary Brewer/Georgina Bingham), Poster, MS MUVE: Behavior, Biocontrol, and Biodiversity
  • 2nd Place: Emile Dayara Rabelo Santana (mentor: Justin McMechan), Poster, Graduate IPM – Field Crops

The annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America is the single largest meeting of entomologists in the world, typically with around 3,000 people in attendance. It presents a great opportunity for networking, and sharing and learning the latest information in the science.
