Since early 2025, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has participated in a pilot cohort testing the new Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability. The effort is being led by the university’s Office of Sustainability.

Nebraska’s flagship university brings the perspective of a Midwestern, land-grant and agriculture-focused institution to the 21-member cohort. The group includes colleges and universities from across the United States.

As the only Big Ten university in the cohort, UNL’s Office of Sustainability staff Morgan Hartman and Madeline Yeatts shared their experience on the SustainUW podcast. The podcast is produced by student interns from the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Office of Sustainability.

The SustainUW team is creating a mini-series highlighting sustainability efforts across the Big Ten. Nebraska’s work is featured in the first episode of the series, available here.
