In celebration of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Information Technology Services is hosting events aimed at raising awareness of the importance of cybersecurity.

The first event is “Cybersecurity Escape Room Challenge! Secure It.” Aimed for people who like puzzles and escape rooms, the free cybersecurity escape room challenge requires a team of four people. This escape room challenge will teach participants a little about two-factor, website security and wifi security while having fun solving puzzles to find the safe way home. This event runs 1 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10 in Nebraska East Union, Cottonwood Room; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 in Nebraska Union, Big Ten Room; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 17 in Nebraska Union, Big Ten Room. Registration is available online.

Special Agent Matt Saad from the Lincoln FBI office presents “Cybersecurity Threats Report” from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 28 in Nebraska Union Chimney Rock Room. Saad will share the latest cybersecurity threats the FBI has been investigating, followed by a question and answer session. The event is free and open to the public.

A CISCO Threat Hunting Workshop is 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 30 in Hawks Hall, Room 111. In this unique lab, attendees will have hands-on interaction with the latest tools to hone their cybersecurity expertise. During the labs, attendees will get to work with an advanced set of automated, integrated cybersecurity technologies they have likely never been exposed to, or at least not on this scale. Participants also will see popular hacking tools in action and gain experience defending critical data. At the end of this event, the attendees will be familiar with the latest defense techniques and technologies to fight various cyber threats. These labs build upon one another, so the full four-hour time commitment is necessary. Prior experience working with CISCO devices is helpful, but not necessary. Open to computer science or cybersecurity students or faculty and ITS staff with advanced technical knowledge. A laptop is required. Registration, which is free, is available online.

The events close out with Cheryl O’Dell, incident response manager for Information Technology Services, leading labs to help participants learn about cyber defense via a workshop, “CISCO Cyber Defense Clinic. Secure It. Protect It,” 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 30 in Hawks Hall, Room 111. There will be a CISCO subject matter expert on location on each campus. This clinic is open to anyone of any technical level. Come to all or part of it. A laptop is required. Registration is available online.
