Saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia will give a free concert at 7 p.m. June 25, concluding the 2019 season of Jazz in June.

Jazz in June’s 28th season wraps with a concert from saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia June 25 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The concert will begin at 7p.m. in the sculpture garden west of the Sheldon Museum, 12th and R streets. The concert series is free, but attendees are encouraged to make a donation of $10 per family to help ensure its continuation.

London-based Garcia is one of the leading forces behind the resurgence of jazz-influenced sounds in the United Kingdom. Raised in a creative environment built by Caribbean parents, her brand of afro-tinged jazz has made her a key component in a string of new and established groups — including work with Moses Boyd, Congo Natty, the Maisha sextet and Nérija septet. Garcia fearlessly threw herself into her debut album, “5ive,” with a clear vision of what she wanted and was meticulous in pursuit of her sound. Enlisting the help of other London musicians, Garcia tapped into well-seasoned, harmonious relationships with players who know and understand her — and this joyful union radiates throughout her compositions.

A market featuring vendors with food, drinks and artisan-made crafts runs from 5 to 9 p.m. at 12th and R streets.

Other events include free yoga from Campus Recreation at 5:30, northwest of Woods Hall; and walking tours of campus gardens at 6 p.m., led by Landscape Services and Facilities Management.

Bike Valet provides free, secure parking for bicycles from 5 p.m. until an hour after each concert at the east end of the market. For more information, visit the Bike Valet webpage or call the Outdoor Adventures Center at 402-472-4777.

In the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances, a concert may need to be canceled. Information on cancellations will be posted to the university homepage and Jazz in June’s social media.
