A film that honors the culinary brilliance of Julia Child is returning to Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Continuing to show is “The Souvenir Part II.”
The films will be the last to show at the Ross in 2021 as the theater will be closed Dec. 24 to Jan. 7.
“Julia” tells the story of Child, a legendary cookbook author and television superstar who changed the way America views food, television and women. The film features never-before-seen archival footage, personal photos, first-person narratives, and cutting-edge, mouth-watering cinematography.
The film traces Child’s surprising path, from struggles to create and publish the revolutionary “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” (which published in 1961 and has sold more than 2.5 million copies to date), to her empowering story of a woman who found fame in her 50s and a calling as an unlikely television sensation.
“Julia,” which is rated PG-13 due to brief strong language, sexual reference and some thematic elements, shows at the Ross through Dec. 23.
“The Souvenir Part II,” is a 2021 drama written and directed by Joanna Hogg.
Building on the events of “The Souvenir Part I,” student filmmaker Julie (played by Honor Swinton Byrne), begins to untangle her tumultuous relationship with a charismatic and manipulative older man. She returns to film school and writes a new script about her relationship.
Advisers push for Julie to abandon the new direction, but she pushes forward with making the script a reality. The story reflects Hogg’s real-world experience in film school.
“The Souvenir Part II,” which is rated R for language and some strong sexuality, shows at the Ross through Dec. 23.
