With an aim to fulfill a small but important need for students on campus, Lavender Closet is holding a bedding drive Aug. 1-11.
Lavender Closet, which is a service in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Gender and Sexuality Center, will collect bedding items to be distributed to students in need.
Among needed items are bed sheets, pillowcases and blankets. All items must be unopened. An Amazon wish list has been established, where items can be purchased and are automatically shipped to the center, and donations can also be dropped off at the center, which is located in Nebraska Union, room 346.
JD McCown, assistant director of the center, said the bedding drive was initiated after the center and other student services received requests for bedding.
“The majority of our requests are for standard residence halls, so extra-long twin bedding is needed,” McCown said. “We only get a few requests a year, but we want to make sure we’re caring for those students. Our hope is that we can stock up once at the beginning of the school year, and have plenty of bedding for the whole year.”
Students in need of bedding will be able to request it from the Lavender Closet, no questions asked, McCown said.
The drive is also in partnership with the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education. Survivors of sexual assault will be referred to Lavender Closet for new bedding if needed.
Additionally, McCown said the Lavender Closet, which is expanding into a new, larger space, is in need of accessories, such as shoes in good repair, neck ties and belts.
Bedding donations and accessory donations can be dropped off in Nebraska Union, room 346.
