January’s events:
- Lunch & Learn: “Growing Goodness” with Blixt, Jan. 5, noon — The Lied’s live video podcast series is kicking off the new year with a celebration of Lincoln-made art and a heartfelt message for families on the front lines of the pandemic. The co-founders of Blixt Locally Grown, Becky Boesen and Petra Wahlqvist, will discuss their newest project, a short film titled “Winter Without Mama.” Working with local and national partners, Blixt developed a musical tribute that honors health care workers on the front lines and raises awareness of their loved ones’ struggles at home. The Blixt team will talk about the inspiration behind the project, the development of the film and all the locally grown goodness Blixt brings to the Lincoln community.
Tiny Lieders: “All Aboard: Trains, Planes, and Automobiles!” Jan. 14, 10 a.m. — All aboard the Tiny Lieders Express! Ashley Laverty, artistic director for Kerfuffle theater company, will lead a 45-minute train- and transportation-themed movement, music and yoga jam designed for children under age 6. Since 2015, Kerfuffle has traveled the Midwest creating theatre and dance for and with young children. Laverty will also share how viewers can help create Kerfuffle’s next Theatre for the Very Young play, “The Conductors.”
Master Classes at the Lied: Dialects with Sasha Dobson, Jan. 17, noon to 1:30 p.m. — This Zoom master class for students ages 11-18 will be an introduction to learning accents, led by Lied Center teaching artist Sasha Dobson. Students will be introduced to the generalized sound of three dialects: Irish, French and Australian. This course will give students the tools to learn dialects deeply and properly, help them discover and develop how different sounds are created phonetically, learn the origins of each accent, build self-confidence and work collaboratively with fellow actors. No preparation is required — just a willingness to learn and try something new. Participants will need a computer or tablet with a front-facing camera and microphone.
Huskers in the Spotlight: Parking Lot Party, Jan. 26, noon — Parking Lot Party is an indie-pop band from Lincoln that blends influences from Mac DeMarco and Peach Pit’s modern guitar tones with the intricate grooves of legends such as The Eagles and Talking Heads. The group performed for the first time in 2018 for a high-school talent show, with the band officially coming together in a Sonic parking lot later that night. In 2019, they picked up steam as they headlined several local shows, culminating in a performance at the annual Skate Art Music Gala at The Bay. In early 2020, the band released its debut EP, “Drive Thru,” and it is working on its next album. Join the band for this lunchtime concert to hear their original music and learn more about their journey thus far.
