Lied's October shows include Trevor Noah, 'Motown'

An evening of comedy with Trevor Noah and four performances of “Motown the Musical” highlight the Lied Center for Performing Arts’ October lineup.

Tickets are on sale online, by phone at 402-472-4747 or at the Lied Center box office, 301 N. 12th St. University of Nebraska-Lincoln students can purchase tickets at a 50 percent discount with a valid NCard.

October’s shows:

  • Trevor Noah, Oct. 6, 7:30 p.m. – The comedian and host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” makes his Lied Center debut on the heels of his latest stand-up special, “Afraid of the Dark.” Noah was the first South African comedian to appear on both “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno and “The Late Show” with David Letterman. He has hosted numerous television shows, including the South African Music Awards, the South African Film and Television Awards and two seasons of his own late-night talk show, “Tonight with Trevor Noah.”

  • Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with Andre Watts, piano, Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m. – The world-renowned chamber orchestra will return to the Lied for the first time since 1999. Based in New York City, the unique ensemble performs without a conductor and will be joined by superstar pianist Watts.

  • “Motown the Musical,” Oct. 21, 2 and 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 22, 1:30 and 7 p.m. – This musical chronicles Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who helped launch the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and more. The Broadway hit includes classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

  • 2017 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist, Oct. 24, 7:30 p.m. – Yekwon Sunwoo bested 29 rivals in the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, becoming the contest’s first champion from South Korea. He will play pieces by Franz Schubert, Percy Grainger, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Maurice Ravel.
