Renowned filmmaker Nick Broomfield’s “Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love” opens Aug. 16 at Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
Also showing is “Maiden,” which showcases a competitive all-female sailboat crew that was nearly inconceivable in the manly world of open-ocean yacht racing.
The romantic “Marianne and Leonard” documentary opens on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Leonard Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne Hilen, a single mother with a young son, are part of a community of expat artists, writers and musicians. The production features never-before-seen footage that offers a unique portrait of an idyllic 1960s bohemia.
It also highlights the root of a friendship between Marianne and Leonard that would last another 50 years until their deaths in 2016.
Scheduled to show through Aug. 22, “Marianne and Leonard” is rated R for some drug material, sexual references and brief nudity.
Set in 1989, “Maiden” features Tracy Edwards, a 26-year-old skipper and her team — doubted by all — as they shock the sailing world during the global, 32,000-mile Whitebread race. Edwards was awarded the 1990 yachtsman of the year award after the race. She was the first woman to ever win the award and was named a member of the Order of the British Empire.
“Maiden” is rated PG for language, thematic elements, some suggestive content and brief smoking images. It shows through Aug. 22.
