In the holiday tradition of giving back, the University of Nebraska State Museum–Morrill Hall is changing its Museums for All admission rate and supporting Husker Pantry. Effective immediately and until further notice, the museum will offer free admission to guests qualifying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.
“Our museum’s mission is to share Nebraska’s natural history with all Nebraskans,” said Susan Weller, director of the NU State Museum. "Museums for All supports the joy of learning for all families, independent of their financial situations.”
Morrill Hall joined Museums for All in early 2020. Museums for All is a national initiative through the Institute of Museum and Library Services offering free or reduced-price admission to science and children’s museums for those qualifying for food benefits. Participation in the program at Morrill Hall has increased annually.
The museum will also support the Husker community as a drop-off site for the Husker Pantry's Winter Food Drive, running through Nov. 12. As a bonus, the museum will give a free admission pass to Mueller Planetarium to anyone who brings a donation for the pantry during the food drive.
Husker Pantry provides free food and personal items to students enrolled at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Nearly one in three Husker students worries about not having enough food. Husker Pantry’s most-needed items are canned goods like soups, beans, fruits and vegetables, as well as hygiene products like toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant.
“We’re grateful to the support our community has shown the museum throughout recent years,” said Adam Eakin, associate director of the NU State Museum. “Now we’d like to share some of that support back into the community and with our Husker family.”
