The University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall will be closed for essential maintenance from Dec. 19 through Jan. 9. The work will prepare the museum for other renovations and deferred maintenance projects from spring 2023 through early 2024.

In April 2021, the Nebraska Legislature approved funding for deferred maintenance projects at the University of Nebraska, including multiple projects at Morrill Hall.

“We’re grateful to the Legislature for their support of our deferred maintenance projects,” said Susan Weller, director of the NU State Museum. “We’re excited about the upcoming facilities work and can’t wait for our members and the public to experience the updates across the museum once the work is completed.”

Visitors in 2023 may notice some minor inconveniences as renovations begin in late spring to address energy conservation, Americans with Disabilities Act access and other deferred maintenance projects. A new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system will be the largest, mostly unseen, renovation. It will bring major improvement to the safety of the specimens and the comfort of museum visitors. Once a work schedule is confirmed with the contractor in early 2023, more information on the projects will be shared.

Those interested in impacts and progress of the museum maintenance and renovations should watch the museum’s website and social media platforms for updates.
