Editor’s note: Due to a chance of rain, this performance has been moved from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s sculpture garden to the Bourbon Theater, 14th and O streets. The Bourbon Theater can accommodate between 600 and 700 people. Seating will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Other outdoor events associated with this performance, such as food vendors and yoga classes, have been canceled.
Jazz in June at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will feature Mwenso and the Shakes in a June 19 performance.
Hailing from Sierra Leone, London, South Africa, Greenwich Village, Madagascar, France, Jamaica and Hawaii, the Shakes are based in Harlem. Taking from the stylings of Fats Waller, Muddy Waters, James Brown and other American musical legends, Michael Mwenso leads an electrifying show that The New York Times calls “intense, prowling and ebullient.”
Concerts in the Jazz in June series are at 7 p.m. each Tuesday in June in the sculpture garden west of the Sheldon Museum of Art, 12th and R streets. The concert series is free, but attendees are encouraged to make a donation of $10 per family to help ensure its continuation.
Concertgoers are allowed to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Pets are not allowed. Recycling bins are provided throughout the concert area.
VIP tickets available
Guests are invited to join Jazz in June’s new membership program, The Rhythm Club. Membership supports the booking of top-tier artists and new education programs, and helps keep the concerts free. Members enjoy VIP seating and meet-and-greets with artists, and can be recognized as event sponsors. Learn more about The Rhythm Club.
Free basic yoga
Campus Recreation offers yoga at 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday in June before the concert northwest of Woods Hall. Participants are encouraged to bring a towel or mat.

For the June 19 tour, Kim Todd, associate professor of agronomy and horticulture and host of NET’s “Backyard Farmer,” will lead a tour through City Campus plantings. She will also answer participants’ landscape/garden questions during the “Backyard Farmer” tour. Learn more about the garden tours.
