The College of Business at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is accepting applications for the inaugural class for a new online Master of Science degree in finance.

Prospective students for the new online finance degree must apply by July 1 for the fall term.

“Students graduate from the M.S. in finance with a competitive edge due to their advanced understanding of the principles of financial markets,” said Richard DeFusco, chair of finance. “This advanced degree sets them up for success in an evolving field.”

In a time where more and more financial data is available, there is also a need for increased financial analysis, and stronger investment and financial management skills. The U.S. Bureau of Statistics reported in 2016 that more than 130,000 new financial and management analyst jobs will be created over the next 10 years. These demands and the expertise of Nebraska Business faculty led to the creation of the new finance degree.

“We made strategic investments to combine engaging, intuitive technology with our world-class Big Ten faculty for a dynamic online learning experience,” said Tammy E. Beck, associate dean of graduate programs and external engagement. “This format enables students to enjoy a consistent online class structure that reduces tech stress and allows them to make more personal connections with peers and faculty.”

Delivered completely online in a series of eight-week courses, the program is designed to provide maximum flexibility for students taking the courses. The program is designed to allow students to easily move into their classes without a technology learning curve. Each class is structured in the same way for convenience.

“Incorporating technology makes this program more accessible and flexible,” Jake Messersmith, executive director of graduate programs and associate professor of management. “Students can stay updated wherever they are with an intuitive mobile app. They can also easily navigate and jump into their coursework using the app.”

Additionally, students benefit and have access to the college’s career resources. Financial Times recently recognized Nebraska for providing online graduate business students with some of the best career resources in the world.

With the first class beginning in August, the Master of Science program joins a growing portfolio of online programs offered by Nebraska Business. Other offerings include the Master of Business Arts and Master of Science in business analytics.
