Nebraska Engineering’s Senior Design Showcase is May 3

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Engineering’s 2024 Senior Design Showcase, Nebraska’s premier undergraduate engineering student design event, is 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the new Kiewit Hall.

The event showcases new and innovative projects from more than 30 teams of graduating seniors. Their projects reflect real-world professional challenges, environments and, in some cases, collaborations with industry clients to develop products and devices that could have immediate impact.

Among the projects on display are:

A leg press machine for multiple sclerosis patients, implementing pneumatics for resistance so that it can be quickly and safely shut down if a patient has muscle spasms.
A cryogenic distillation process that can liquify air and then be used to separate components to scale up the production of liquid forms of oxygen, nitrogen and argon used across multiple industries.
A network of sensors that uses wireless communication capabilities to monitor soil and air quality to detect impurities that could be detrimental to plant growth.
Three projects for the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum that include interactive elements — one to spotlight the mechanics of a recently acquired Lunar Lander Rover, one that simulates the speed of an SR-71 aircraft and another that launches rockets built by museum visitors.
A device that can help develop grip muscle memory in ultrasound operators, who commonly have hand and wrist repetitive stress injuries, and provide alerts when too much pressure is used.

Team members will be on hand to demonstrate and discuss their projects. Guests are encouraged to vote for their favorite project at the People’s Choice Award voting station.

The School of Computing’s Senior Design Showcase will showcase its seniors’ capstone projects from 1 to 4:30 p.m. May 9 in the Ballroom of the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. Student teams will be available to discuss their projects and will give presentations in breakout rooms.
