Dylan Jensen, a freshman from Columbus, sets up flags as the sun rises on Sept. 9. Jensen said his dad has been on active duty for 22 years and has deployed twice to Iraq and once to Bosnia. He said his dad lost a good friend in Bosnia in 2003. Placing flags was Jensen's way to honor his dad and all who lost their lives on 9/11 and in service to the nation.
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s observance of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks includes a flag display in the Donald and Lorena Meier Common green space north of the Nebraska Union.
The flag display was organized by the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska and was completed by nearly 20 student volunteers. Huskers who helped place the flags included members of the university’s ROTC program, the Student Veterans of America, students who participated to honor friends and family members who have served in the military, and some who were inspired to help while walking by.
