Nebraska’s rich history, diverse cultures and tight-knit communities are celebrated in Nebraska Public Media’s newest local documentary highlighting the state’s vibrant murals.
“The Magic of Murals” premieres at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 on Nebraska Public Media, YouTube and Facebook Live.
A new wave of artists is adding splashes of color and creativity, beautifying towns and cities with hopes of attracting visitors, stimulating local economies and making art accessible. The program will highlight murals in Omaha, Lincoln, Alliance, Grand Island, Ogallala, Beatrice, Brule and more.
In South Omaha, explore one of the state’s newest and largest murals painted on the silos at Ardent Mills, along Highway 75 – a prominent location that makes both the process and this public art accessible to everyone who passes by.
In the village of Brule in Keith County, viewers will witness the transformation of a local park building. One of its four sides features a mural of a park bench surrounded by flowers, creating an immersive “selfie” background for social media.
“The Magic of Murals” will also examine how large-scale art is transforming neighborhoods, gardens and downtown districts – making them tourist destinations for artists, art lovers and those who want to learn more about moving art from the canvas to the community.
