Carol L. Hegel, 72, a longtime employee who served the University of Nebraska–Lincoln for more than four decades, died May 13.
Hegel was born Nov. 23, 1953, in O’Neill, Nebraska, to Leo and Clara (Fuhrer) Fiala. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1972 before attending Northeast Nebraska Technical Community College. She transferred to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and earned a degree in interior design in 1976.
She dedicated 42 years of service to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln community, serving in agricultural communications (now the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication) and the Department of Biochemistry. She retired on Jan. 3, 2019.
Hegel is survived by her husband, Richard Hegel of Lincoln; daughter Megan (Hegel) Snethen and son-in-law Lucas Snethen; brother Duane Fiala; nephews Patrick and Hayden Fiala; brother-in-law Dennis Hegel; sister-in-law Renee Hegel; and a soon-to-be granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.
Services were held May 26 at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln. Burial followed at Wyuka Cemetery.
