Two University of Nebraska-Lincoln online master’s degree programs ranked among the top 25 programs in their respective categories in national rankings released Jan. 26 by U.S. News & World Report.
The university’s online Master of Business Administration, known as MBA@Nebraska, jumped five places from 2020 to be ranked 17th among online MBA programs nationally.
The online Master of Engineering Management degree moved up two places from 2020 to be ranked 21st among online master’s in engineering programs across the country.
Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the College of Business, said the ranking is a recognition of the university’s efforts to train and develop leaders who advance our state, country and the world.
“The world needs business leaders who are able to navigate the rapidly changing business environment,” she said. “We’re fulfilling our mission by empowering individuals from Nebraska to Nepal to lead the future of business and we’re doing it at the highest levels.”
Both programs compare favorably among the Big Ten and public universities. The MBA@Nebraska ranked fourth among Big Ten universities while the online master’s in engineering ranked sixth. MBA@Nebraska ranked 13th among online MBA programs offered by public universities, while the MEM program ranked 17th among online programs offered by public universities.
“We’re very pleased that our online MEM program continues to rise in national rankings; this program is a great example of the world class education the college provides to the engineering and construction industries in Nebraska and nationally,” said Lance C. Pérez, dean of the College of Engineering and Omar H. Heins Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
U.S. News ranked the programs using five key indicators: Engagement, or interaction between instructors and classmates; Expert opinion from a survey of high-ranking academic officials; Faculty credentials and training; Student excellence; and Student services and technology. A program’s score for each ranking indicator is calculated using data reported to U.S. News and form data collected in a separate peer assessment survey.
MBA@Nebraska earns high marks from college ranking programs for offering best value for the money compared to other highly ranked programs. Costs to earn the degree total less than $32,000 including tuition and fees.
“The value of an MBA from Nebraska is hard to overstate,” said Patrick Jungers, senior technology leader at Nelnet, who earned his MBA to grow in his career, including using analytics to better manage. “Every course provided me with insight into the workings of my company and many of them provided me actionable items to bring back to my team.”
Jamie Williams, who also completed the MBA@Nebraska program, said the program allowed him to make his degree unique to him and his passions.
“All the faculty deliver information in their own style and that’s what I wanted,” he said. “They bring in their own experience, personality and opinions that provide the foundation to make you think about business in different ways.” e
Graduates of the MEM program cite its flexibility and quality.
“What attracted me most to Nebraska’s MEM program was the flexibility to customize your learning experience,” Jaime Ristow said. “I wanted to become a better technical leader and get exposure to business courses I wasn’t required to take as an undergraduate.”
Matt Walker said his superiors noted a noticeable change in his management approach because of the MEM.
“Going back to my alma mater for the MEM was a no-brainer,” he said. “The quality of the program is top notch. Courses are led by outstanding instructors who genuinely care about the success of their students.”
