Despite the challenges of a global pandemic, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln remains committed to international education. The Office of Global Strategies invites all departments, colleges and student organizations to host an event in celebration of International Education Week, which the university will be celebrating over a two-week period of Nov. 9-20.
International Education Week is a combined initiative of the US. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The annual event is celebrated in more than 100 countries, spotlighting international diversity and encouraging others to experience new cultures. Last year, Nebraska hosted more than 40 events across campus with over 20 university partners.
The official dates for IEW are Nov. 16-20 this year, which falls close to Nebraska’s exam period for the shortened fall semester. Thus, university leaders decided to extend the celebration a week prior to allow more flexibility for student preparing for final exams.
All campus units are welcome to join in hosting an event between Nov. 9-20. To ensure student and campus safety from COVID-19, Global Strategies encourages the consideration of virtual events or will require mask-wearing and social distancing for in-person events, according to the university’s event guidelines.
Some examples of common event ideas include, but are not limited to:
- Information sessions on education abroad opportunities in a department
- Foreign language conversation workshops
- Student presentations on their home countries
- Virtual or socially distanced open house with global features
- Panel discussions, lectures and presentations on topics such as international research, global careers and post-graduate opportunities
As events are updated for the 2020 calendar, details will be posted on the IEW website. All students, faculty and staff are also welcome to join the celebration by using #IEW2020 and #IEWatUNL on social media posts.
The Office of Global Strategies will publicize all events. If a unit plans to host an event for IEW, please contact Courtney Van Hoosen at cvanhoosen2@unl.edu to have your event added to the comprehensive web calendar and all promotional materials. Please ensure that final event details are submitted no later than Wednesday, November 4.
