The University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Harris Center for Judaic Studies will host Art Zygielbaum, professor emeritus in the School of Natural Resources, for a lecture, "Dissonance of the Soul," at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Nebraska Union's Regency Suite.
Zygielbaum's parents were Holocaust survivors. Along with his wife, Chris, and son David, Zygielbaum traveled to Poland to connect to his Polish roots. Accompanied by Beth Dotan, research assistant professor in the Harris Center, they visited cities, towns and villages where Zygielbaum's parents and grandparents lived.
They also visited four concentration camps and several museums dedicated to Polish Jewish history. Because Zygielbaum's grandfather, Szmul Mordecai (Arthur) Zygielbojm is considered a hero in Poland, they were invited to the presidential palace to meet with the Poland's secretary of state. They were also accorded a personal tour of Chelm, Poland, by the mayor of the city.
Zygielbaum will discuss the trip, its profound impact on him, and the implications of what he learned.
