Edythe London will give a talk on “What Brain Imaging Has Taught Us About Addiction” at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 13.
This event is free and open to the public. Register for the Zoom link.
London will cover how the imaging of brain structure, chemistry and function is possible using noninvasive techniques that have been applied to the study of addiction. She will also discuss how it is possible to identify regional and circuit-level abnormalities that maintain drug misuse and promote a return to drug use after the initiation of abstinence.
Dr. Edythe London is a distinguished professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, and Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA. Her work focuses on neurochemical and circuit-level abnormalities to inform evidence-based treatments for addiction. Bridging psychiatry, pharmacology and neuroscience, she has provided notable firsts: mapping drug-induced euphoria and drug craving in the human brain, visualizing the cerebral distributions of actions of abused drugs, and developing probes for external brain imaging. Focusing on corticostriatal circuitry, dopamine receptor signaling and executive functioning, her recent work provides potential therapeutic targets for addiction.
This talk is sponsored by the Rural Drug Addiction Research (RDAR) Center, and it is an installment within their seminar series.
