Research Fair opens with faculty retreat


The Fall UNL Research Fair the week of Nov. 17 features a diverse lineup, including opportunities to learn more about UNL research priorities and attend presentations on topics ranging from funding opportunities for startup companies to defense-related research to broadening participation in STEM education.

The 15th Research Fair is a campuswide celebration of research, scholarship and creativity. Events, held in the Nebraska Union and at locations across campus, are free, but some require online registration. Events

Events kick off Nov. 16-17 with a faculty retreat focused on the future of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. Registration is required and details are available on the “Movies & Beyond: Connecting Digital Creativity Across Disciplines” website.

On Nov. 18, people interested in startup companies and commercializing products can learn about Nebraska Innovation Fund grants and investments during a noon luncheon at the Wick Alumni Center.

Nov. 19 offers a full day of activities starting with three breakfast events.

The Defense Funding Opportunities Breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Nebraska Union will feature current and former Department of Defense program officers Barry Pallotta, DARPA; Cindy Daniell, SRI International Physical Sciences Division; and N. Radhakrishnan, a consultant formerly with the Army Research Laboratory. Students, postdocs and faculty also are invited to interact informally with the speakers at a Research Café at 4 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Crib.

Events for postdocs and principal investigators begin at 8 a.m. with the Postdoc/Mentor Awards Breakfast in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. Keith Micoli, chair of the National Postdoctoral Association board of directors, will give a keynote address “On Leadership: Creating Your Own Luck.” At 10 a.m., Micoli will lead a workshop, “Learning to Lead: Lessons from the Bench.” The UNL Office of Postdoctoral Studies is hosting both events.

The Center for Children, Youth, Families and Schools will mark its 10th anniversary with a breakfast event, “Education Funding, Research and Opportunity: CYFS at 10 and Beyond,” at 8:30 a.m. in the Wick Alumni Center. Thomas W. Brock, commissioner of the National Center for Education Research, will give a keynote address.

Faculty and students interested in diversity and STEM education will want to attend “Broadening Participation in STEM: Strategies for Success” at 9:30 a.m. The panel discussion will feature administrators and faculty from Jackson State University, Texas State University and UNL in the Nebraska Union.

For the first time since its inception in 2001, the annual celebration of faculty accomplishments is moving from breakfast to lunch. The Faculty Recognition Lunch will be in the Nebraska Union Centennial Room with registration beginning at 11:15 a.m. and the buffet at 11:30 a.m.

On Nov. 20, the “Overview of NSF Education and Human Resources Funding Opportunities” videoconference will feature Ellen McCallie, program director of the NSF Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings. The videoconference is at 9 a.m. in Whittier Research Center Room 152.
