Roy finds connection, opportunity on and off the course in PGA program

An avid golfer since he was 6 years old, Atirath Deb Roy can see the game from every angle. As a student in Nebraska’s Professional Golf Management program, Roy has come to see the game he loves — and his place within it — with a fresh perspective.

Roy, a senior from New Delhi, India, came halfway across the world to be part of Nebraska’s unique PGA program.

“Before I came here, I didn't realize how many avenues there are in the world of golf,” Roy said. “This program pushes you to explore as many opportunities as possible in the industry and helped me learn so much about what’s out there.”

Since choosing to attend Nebraska’s PGA Golf Management program — one of only sixteen accredited PGA programs in the nation — mere weeks before traveling from his hometown to start classes, Roy has fully embraced the abundance of opportunities the program offers.

“I’ve been able to secure three internships during the program,” said Roy. “The first was working for a corporate club manufacturer, the second was teaching at a private golf course in Virginia and the third was working at a youth nonprofit in Harlem and the Bronx that combines teaching golf with academic support and life skills.”

While opening himself up to new experiences through golf, Roy chose to open himself up on campus by becoming a resident assistant.

“Moving halfway across the world where I didn’t know anyone was scary, but my first-year RA was so helpful with everything — she even made my parents feel better during move-in," he said. "I wanted to be that person for someone else.”

Throughout this journey, Roy has grown both as a player and as a person, seeing a future in golf that allows him to build on his love of connecting and learning through the sport.

“The program has really opened my eyes to how much I love teaching. Sharing my knowledge to help others improve is a really great feeling,” he said. “From teaching to being an RA, I’ve learned I'm really adaptable and can easily connect with people, especially on the golf course. I’m just excited to keep going places, meet new people and see where it takes me.”
