A Genoa Remembrance Day Panel Discussion is 5:30 p.m. March 6, in Sheldon Museum of Art.
This event was originally scheduled for Feb. 20, but postponed due to weather.
The event will include remarks by Judi gaiashkibos, a UNITE student-led panel, and community conversations, with refreshments provided.
The panel will reflect on the history of the Genoa Indian Industrial School, where Native children were taken from their families and forced to attend a federal boarding school. Participants will honor those who never returned home and explore ways to acknowledge and carry forward truth and healing.
Operating from 1884 to 1934, the Genoa school was the fourth-largest non-reservation boarding school established by the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs. Located on former Pawnee Reservation land, it enrolled children from more than 10 states and over 40 tribal nations. The school grew from 74 students to more than 500, with more than 30 buildings on 640 acres.
