'Stan and Ollie' opens Jan. 25 at the Ross

Stan and Ollie,” a tribute to comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, opens Jan. 25 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The film follows the pair’s bittersweet final bow as they embark on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. With their golden era of comedy behind them, Stan Laurel, played by Steve Coogan, and Oliver Hardy, played by John C. Reilly, face an uncertain future as they try to reignite their film careers. The movie captures the pair’s journey as they reconnect with fans, confront the past and realize the depth of their partnership.

“Stan and Ollie” is rated PG for some language and smoking. It plays through Feb. 7.

Directed by Julian Schnabel, “At Eternity’s Gate” is a journey through the world and mind of Vincent van Gogh. Starring Willem Dafoe as van Gogh, the film is not a true biography. Rather, the production features scenes generated through the artists’s letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are imagined.

“At Eternity’s Gate” is rated R for some thematic content. It shows through Jan. 31.
