Starita's book is companion to NET's 'Medicine Woman'

"Medicine Woman"

Medicine Woman” premieres at 8 p.m. Nov. 10 on NET Television.

The broadcast explores the life of Susan La Flesche Picotte, America’s first Native American doctor. Born in Nebraska in 1865, she graduated first in her class from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. She then returned home to fight for the survival of her Omaha tribe.

Joe Starita, professor of journalism and mass communications, is author of “A Warrior of the People,” a biography of Picotte. The book serves as a companion piece to the documentary.

“Medicine Woman” also features three modern-day women doctors from the Omaha Lakota and Navajo tribes. The production showcases the work these doctors do and what they’ve learned in their communities.

“Medicine Woman” will also air at 2 p.m. Nov. 13 and 8 p.m. Nov. 15.

The broadcast is among an NET series organized in honor of Native American Heritage Month. Other airings in the series include:
