The UNL Symphony Orchestra will host a “Holiday in Vienna” concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 in the O’Donnell Auditorium at Nebraska Wesleyan University, 5000 Huntington Ave. The concert is free and open to the public.
The UNL Symphony Orchestra is directed by Tyler White, professor of conducting and composition and director of orchestras.
“Our concert is designed to evoke the spirit, grace and verve of life in Vienna during the Austrian capital’s glory days of the 19th and early 20th centuries,” White said.
The program begins with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92.” Next on the program is “The Waltz King" and Johann Strauss II’s “Overture to ‘Der Zigeunerbaron,’” which White said reflect the multicultural energies of Vienna. The program concludes with Richard Strauss’ suite from “Der Rosenkavalier, Op. 49,” arranged by Artur Rodzinski.
“The suite from Richard Strauss’s beloved opera ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ contains some of the most lyrical, soaring and radiant music of the entire operatic/orchestral canon,” White said. “Bring your dancing shoes for this holiday extravaganza.”
The 80-member UNL Symphony Orchestra, Nebraska’s oldest orchestral organization, featuresstudents from across the university. The symphony maintains a national reputation for excellence, recognized by invitations to perform at national and regional conventions of music educators, and by four awards from the National Opera Association.
