Ukraine doc opening Jan. 3 at the Ross

A film still from "Porcelain War" shows a ceramic painted owl with a bullet hole.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center is ushering in the new year with a new documentary on screen, "Porcelain War."

Continuing is "All We Imagine as Light."

"Porcelain War" is a stunning tribute to the resilience of the human spirit, embodying the enduring hope and passion of ordinary people living through extraordinary circumstances. As war ravages their homeland, three artists choose to stay in their native Ukraine, armed with their art, their cameras, and for the first time in their lives, their guns.

"Porcelain War" won the 2024 Sundance Grand Jury Prize. It is showing through Jan. 9 and is rated R.

Also showing through Jan. 9, “All We Imagine as Light” follows the lives of three working-class women in Mumbai as they deal with heartache, hopes and disappointment. Directed and written by Payal Kapadia, the film is a study of the complexities and richness of friendship and sisterhood.

“All We Imagine as Light” won the Grand Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It is not rated.
